About the Event
The 15th Annual Women Swimmin’ for Hospicare will be Saturday, August 11, 2018, at the Ithaca Yacht Club (IYC). This year’s goal is to raise $408,500 to support Hospicare’ s work in our community. Through the generosity of our friends and neighbors, who recognize the importance of our mission, we are able to bring medical expertise and compassionate care to all those in Tompkins and Cortland Counties who are facing the end of life, as well as provide support, comfort and guidance for their family members. The money raised through Women Swimmin’ also allows Hospicare to provide bereavement services to patients’ family members and others in our community who are grieving a loss.
Early in the morning of August 11, more than 300 swimmers will gather at Cass Park and board busses for the east shore of Cayuga Lake. From there they will enter the water and begin their journey west to IYC. Swimmers are grouped together in Pods, often made up of friends or family members, and escorted along the way by more than 170 volunteer boaters who oversee their safety.
In 2015 Women Swimmin' added pool swimming as an option to participants. While Lake Swimmers complete a 1.2 mile swim across Cayuga Lake each year, Laps swimmers are free to swim any distance they choose, in any pool with a certified lifeguard, to fundraise for Hospicare. Women Swimmin’ Laps for Hospicare opened on March 15 and continues through August 11. This year Hospicare is pleased to partner with the Cortland County Family YMCA, The YWCA of Cortland, and the YMCA of Ithaca & Tompkins County to provide swimmers a place to swim their laps, track their progress and even find some swim buddies. Laps swimmers are also swimming in other pools around Ithaca, across NY and around the country!
This year’s event co-chairs are Betsy East and Linda Mikula
