Kerry Demarest's Women Swimmin' Fundraising Page

On August 10th I will swim across Cayuga Lake with an amazing community of Ithaca women. This will be my seventh Women Swimmin’ and I’m honored to be a part of this inspirational event.
While I swim for many reasons, I started swimming to honor my Grampa. Grampa loved the water, and we spent so many happy summers together visiting Webster Lake in New Hampshire. Participating in the swim has been a way for me to feel close to him again, to honor him, and to do something that I know he would feel proud of.
Participating in the swim has become ever more important to me. Over the years, I’ve heard so many stories from people who have lost their loved ones and who have benefited from the incredible services that Hospicare provides. I’ve received donations from complete strangers. Sometimes, a person will see my Women Swimmin’ pin, and they’ll share with me a story about how a Hospicare staff person comforted them or even helped them create a lasting special memory. People consistently thank me over and over for participating in this event, which raises so much money.
The funny thing is though, I feel like I’m the one who should be thankful. I get to swim, which I love to do. I even get to swim across the lake, which I wouldn’t be able to safely do on my own. I also get this extra special day to remember all of the people I love who are no longer with us, and a wonderful way to honor them. And all the while, both as I do the big swim and while I train, I am propelled and buoyed by the donations and support that come my way while fundraising.
In April this year I learned that over the years I have raised over $15,000 for Hospicare. Logically I knew I was close to this milestone, however I still could not believe it. The generosity of my friends, family, and even strangers blow me away year after year, but seeing that HUGE number really hit home what a difference everyone is making. These donations help keep the services of Hospicare available to everyone in our community, regardless of their ability to pay. If I had to choose one single reason for swimming each year, it would be because I fundamentally believe that people deserve dignity and comfort – no matter what their financial means are.
Please consider giving what you can to support this wonderful organization and the work that they do. Every dollar helps, so if you can only donate $5*, that's fine! If you can donate more and it feels good to do so, please do. There are also many other ways that you can participate in this event, or with Hospicare. Please let me know if you have questions and I will steer you in the right direction. Over the years I have met many people who are involved in many ways, and no matter what your interests may be, there is a way for you to be a part of Hospicare and to have a significant impact on the lives of people in their end.
Thank you so much for reading and for your consideration. I’m not a very good swimmer – but the swim is “easy” when I know how much good it is doing, and how supported I am by you wonderful people.
with infinite gratitude,
Kerry
*Last year I learned that the online donation software wouldn't allow contributions below $10. You can always give me cash that I can pass along, or send a check directly to Hospicare.
